{"id":12935,"date":"2022-10-25T14:47:46","date_gmt":"2022-10-25T13:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/willows.uk.net\/?p=12935"},"modified":"2022-11-22T23:04:48","modified_gmt":"2022-11-22T23:04:48","slug":"novel-new-treatment-ends-bens-four-years-of-lameness-and-limping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/79.170.43.200\/chameleontesting.co.uk\/willowsoldsite\/novel-new-treatment-ends-bens-four-years-of-lameness-and-limping\/","title":{"rendered":"NOVEL NEW TREATMENT ENDS BEN\u2019S FOUR YEARS OF LAMENESS AND LIMPING"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A novel new treatment delivered here at Willows has helped cure a dog who had endured four years of sporadic lameness and limping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight-year-old Labrador Ben first injured himself while chasing a ball when he was just three years old and had never fully recovered \u2013 until now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to our multi-disciplinary approach and pioneering care, Ben has finally bounced back to his best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, Willows managing director <a href=\"http:\/\/79.170.43.200\/chameleontesting.co.uk\/willowsoldsite\/the-leadership-team\/\">Toby Gemmill<\/a>, an RCVS and European specialist in small animal surgery, addressed Ben\u2019s elbow dysplasia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toby then handed over care to colleagues <a href=\"http:\/\/79.170.43.200\/chameleontesting.co.uk\/willowsoldsite\/the-team\/specialist-team\/anaesthesia\/\">Jacques Ferreira<\/a>, an RCVS and European specialist in <a href=\"http:\/\/79.170.43.200\/chameleontesting.co.uk\/willowsoldsite\/specialist-services\/pet-health-information\/anaesthesia\/\">anaesthesia and analgesia<\/a>, and veterinary <a href=\"http:\/\/79.170.43.200\/chameleontesting.co.uk\/willowsoldsite\/specialist-services\/pet-health-information\/veterinary-physiotherapy\/\">physiotherapist<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/79.170.43.200\/chameleontesting.co.uk\/willowsoldsite\/the-team\/specialist-team\/chronic-pain-clinic\/\">Emma Box<\/a>, who combined to complete the Labrador\u2019s recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ANTI-INFLAMMATORY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacques said: \u201cBen\u2019s elbow dysplasia had been previously diagnosed and managed by Toby using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn examination by Emma and myself confirmed the presence of chronic pain which was secondary to his ongoing elbow osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis had caused severe, intermittent left forelimb lameness which was frequently preventing Ben from being able to enjoy his walks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe looked at pain relief and control and started Ben on Bedinvetmab which is a monoclonal antibody therapy targeting nerve growth factor, and on Amantadine, a chronic pain medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBedinvetmab was only launched a year ago and is a novel, highly-selective pain killer which is administered via injection once a month and uses the body\u2019s own immune system to provide pain relief for sore joints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PHYSIOTHERAPY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEmma supplemented this with a series of exercises and a gradual re-introduction of walking and the combination of treatments worked well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy reducing Ben\u2019s pain, we were able to improve his core strength and mobility through the physiotherapy plan and this has enabled Ben to enjoy his walks again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe saw a good improvement within 28 days and Ben has maintained and increased his activity levels and can now walk without lameness or limping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/79.170.43.200\/chameleontesting.co.uk\/willowsoldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Ben-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ben, a golden labrador, sitting on a stone wall. In fact, I\u2019ve already done so with my son, whose own Labrador has been through the same process recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs for Ben, his walking improved to normal within a week. We built him up very carefully, though, as he had lost muscle strength due to the lack of exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow he\u2019s doing a total of 100 minutes on average a day, over three walks, with no detrimental effects.
