{"id":12951,"date":"2022-11-07T13:07:25","date_gmt":"2022-11-07T13:07:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/willows.uk.net\/?p=12951"},"modified":"2022-11-22T23:03:53","modified_gmt":"2022-11-22T23:03:53","slug":"successful-cure-found-for-dogs-persistent-skin-complaint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/79.170.43.200\/chameleontesting.co.uk\/willowsoldsite\/successful-cure-found-for-dogs-persistent-skin-complaint\/","title":{"rendered":"SUCCESSFUL CURE FOUND FOR DOG\u2019S PERSISTENT SKIN COMPLAINT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our Head of Dermatology here at Willows has been praised after successfully treating a dog\u2019s long-running skin complaint which had caused widespread crusting and scabbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/79.170.43.200\/chameleontesting.co.uk\/willowsoldsite\/the-team\/specialist-team\/dermatology\/\">Dr Richard Harvey<\/a> revealed the eight-year-old Hungarian Vizsla was suffering from an autoimmune condition called canine exfoliative cutaneous lupus erythematosus (ECLE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>European Specialist Dr Harvey\u2019s accurate diagnosis and swift treatment produced a remarkable recovery in the dog, called Jasper, and his owner Victoria Proctor, from Lichfield in Staffordshire, said she was extremely grateful her beloved pet\u2019s long-running skin problems had finally been solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victoria said: \u201cIt was such a relief to finally know what the problem was with Jasper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrior to seeing Richard, we\u2019d taken Jasper to another Vet and tests had been carried out but we were none the wiser regarding what was going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a worrying time. Jasper was very uncomfortable and hadn\u2019t been himself for a long time, but Richard was amazing and so quick to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGoing to see him at Willows has made all the difference and, subsequently, whenever I have had a question, I have been able to e-mail him and receive quick responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>INFLAMED <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince his diagnosis, I have been able to reduce his medication and currently he isn\u2019t taking any tablets at all and I have been able to do this all under Richard\u2019s guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJasper still has bald patches from the scarring, as he scratched his skin when it was inflamed, but his skin looks so much healthier now and he\u2019s much happier, far more energetic and back to being a normal vizsla. I\u2019m very grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Harvey said the underlying cause of ECLE was unclear but the result is the body\u2019s own auto-immune system attacks cells within the skin, causing erosions, hair loss and accumulations of crust and scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cCanine ECLE is one of a number of variants of canine cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Although Jasper\u2019s clinical history and examination were suspicious of ECLE, a definitive diagnosis is necessary for three reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFirstly, the disease is likely to require long-term treatment and, secondly, ECLE is one of the variants which has, historically, proved very difficult to manage successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SKIN BIOPSY<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, because any treatment is likely to be long term, this raises questions of side-effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDiagnosis of ECLE requires a histopathological examination of a skin biopsy which is sent to a specialist pathologist for analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJasper\u2019s histopathology was consistent with ECLE but, luckily for Jasper, a colleague and I were aware of a novel treatment for this condition which is associated with very much reduced side-effects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe immediately began this course of treatment and happily it has proved a real success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Harvey has subsequently used Jasper\u2019s case, and six others that he has treated, in a case report entitled:&nbsp; Effective treatment of canine chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus variants with oclacitinib.
